Jonathan
Miller, on being
introduced as an atheist on live debate on God
(Thu 26th Feb
04):
Well
first of all let me say I am extremely reluctant to use the term atheist,
not because I am ashamed of it but because I would never use a special term
to describe my disbelief in witches or fairies, and the notion of atheism as
something which is actually been thrust on those who actually have never
entertained a thought for God , its a badge, its a label which I now
have to lay claim to, simply because it would be shameful to deny it.
So yes, Im an atheist,
I dont believe in God, I dont even know what people are talking about when
they use that glottally-stopped monosyllable its never entered my
thoughts, I was never introduced to it, and fortunately no one got to me
before my cognitive immune system got working, so therefore it never
played a part in my life, and I think in contrast to this programme where
you have an unrepresentatively small number of people who are like myself,
there are enormous numbers of people who simply have never given it a
thought" |
