Playing Cards The common pack
of playing cards first appeared in Europe in the late 1300s, and seems to have
astronomical connections:
- it is evenly divided into red and black cards, analogous to day and night
- 52 cards correspond to the 52 weeks in the year
- the year has four seasons, and the pack has four suits
- there are 13 cards per suit, and 13 lunar cycles per year
- when you add all the points per card (with jack = 11, queen = 12,
king = 13, ),
and give the joker the value of 1 - the total is 365, the number of days in the
year
