Brain Aerobics

15-10-99

Hello AIG members

Last night's audience at the UND Astronomy Society meeting (about 45 persons, including 10 AIG members) not only enjoyed learning fascinating facts about the Hubble Space Telescope, but participated in some healthy brain aerobics as well!

Prof. Hughes told us all about the Hubble Space Telescope - clearly one of humanity's greatest technological achievements.

Dr. Krumm then demonstrated the fascinating mathematical relationship between the orbits of our solar system's planets - an intriguing pattern that to this day no-one can properly explain (!).

Prof. Bedford then took us on a fascinating (and surprisingly easy-to-follow) journey into the hows and whys of Einstein's Theory of Relativity. The conclusions we all came to (well, most of us.....) were stunning indeed: GRAVITY IS AN IMAGINARY FORCE AND THE RATE AT WHICH TIME PASSES CAN VARY.........!

Wow - "real" reality is certainly quite different from what we so confidently assume it to be!

It was a most entertaining evening and we thank the UND Physics Dept. for its efforts at popularizing physics in such a fun way.

The new UND Astronomy Society T-shirt was also available for only R30.

The final meeting of the year will be on Thursday 28th October at 7PM - looking at the magnificent aurora and the work done in the Antarctic by the Physics Dept.

Hope to see you there.
